Berti Vogts

The tour of the Far East has shown that Berti Vogts must be given time to get his young players acclimatised to international football.

Much has been said about the four defeats since the German took over, but that has to be balanced by the fact several senior players are out.

The return of Barry Ferguson, Paul Lambert, Don Hutchison and Craig Burley should see a great improvement in the team's performances.

If Berti Vogts guides Scotland to the finals of Euro 2004 it will be a fantastic achievement.

He is right, however, to set his sights on a second-place finish in our group as no coach could turn mediocre players into world-beaters in just 12 months.

He is also quite correct to look to the future by giving youth a fling. I think that, given time, Vogts will become one of the most successful Scotland bosses of all time.
