Brazilian Bruno Carvalho has arrived at Almondvale on a week's trial.

The 29-year-old defender has played for Vasco da Gama, Flamengo, Fluminese and Botafogo and is well known by Livi head coach and countryman Marcio Maximo. General manager David Hay told the Evening News: "Bruno is over for a week and his CV certainly looks impressive. However, we'll want to see him in training before we make any decision on signing him.

"I'm not sure when he last played so we'll need to assess his fitness but his record looks promising." The player, who is reportedly highly recommended by Brazil legend Carlos Alberto, has arrived at the club and would be the first Brazilian to play for the Lions if handed a contract.

Skipper Stuart Lovell, meantime, has been ruled for the first month of the SPL campaign because of a knee injury. The Australian midfielder suffered a stop-start first season with the West Lothian club through injury and coach Allan Preston admits he feared the 31-year-old would be out for even longer.

Preston said: "It's not a complete tear of the cartilage, so he will be out for four weeks. He is the club captain and an influential player and we need him back both for ourselves and for his own sanity.''

Striker Juanjo Camacho is also set to miss the opening weeks of the campaign due to a partial dislocation of his left shoulder.
