Gough hails fighting Lions

Gough said "We came here to get three points but it’s still pleasing to leave with one considering we came back from a goal down.

"I was especially pleased with the players’ attitude and the spirit they showed throughout the game. There are a lot of twists and turns left this season and all four teams at the bottom will be battling as hard as they can. United have so many good players in their squad and not many teams will leave here with points now."

United striker Jim McIntyre, meanwhile, believes referee Kevin Toner cost his team three precious SPL points by denying him a ‘stonewall’ penalty, He went crashing to the floor under a challenge from Emmanuel Dorado 20 seconds after half-time and, as everyone inside Tannadice looked for the official to point to the spot, he signalled play on.

McIntyre - whose side were a goal up thanks to Stevie Crawford’s 37th-minute header - remonstrated furiously with the official in the aftermath and revealed Toner later explained his decision by maintaining the player had stubbed his toe on the turf first, shown by TV pictures to be 100% correct.

United were eventually pegged back by Eric Deloumeaux’s goal and a potentially-crucial three points were snatched away from them. McIntyre said: "It was a stonewall penalty (you what??). I don’t understand for the life of me why it wasn’t given, the referee says I kicked the ground but the guy took me out with a kick to the back of the leg."
