The former Scottish internationalist and Champions League medal-winner took over his new post at Almondvale stadium, accompanied by his new assistant and former St Mirren team mate Norrie McWhirter.

They replace Richard Gough and Archie Knox, who stood down at the end of the season last week.

“I am delighted to begin my new career at Livingston today,” commented Paul Lambert. “We will be getting straight to business in terms of assessing the first-team squad, looking at new players and preparing for the challenge of the new season in the SPL.”

He and Norrie McWhirter – who have agreed three-year contracts at Livingston – will work closely with reserve coach Alex Cleland and youth development manager Graeme Robertson, completing one of the youngest and most professional management teams in Scottish senior football.

“We were very pleased to confirm the appointments of Paul and Norrie at Livingston,” commented Livingston chief executive Vivien Kyles.

“This has been a momentous few weeks for the club, which has exited administration, retained its place in the SPL and can now look forward to a fresh start under new management both in terms of business and football,” she added.

”This year we and the supporters will be celebrating Livingston’s 10th anniversary and we have a series of initiatives planned to encourage more local involvement and expand our football and business activities.”

Club chairman Pearse Flynn said that the appointments reflected the club’s ambition to build a strong first-team squad and build on Livingston’s position within the SPL.

“Paul Lambert has an excellent football brain and is respected greatly within the sport. He achieved a great deal as a player and as his commitment to completing his UEFA coaching licence in Germany last year demonstrates, he is determined to succeed in management. We were greatly impressed by his vision, ambition and down-to-earth approach to football,” added Pearse Flynn.

Lambert, 35, enjoyed a glittering playing career with Celtic, Borussia Dortmund, Motherwell and St Mirren. He was capped 74 times for Scotland and has made more than 250 appearances for Celtic during the last seven years. He won the Champions’ League with Borussia Dortmund in 1997.
